The 9th International Cancer Congress

In the history of the UICC-Japan, the 9th International Cancer Congress held in Tokyo in 1966 has a special importance. In those days the UICC International Cancer Congress was a highly prestigious event that was held every 4 years. Professor Tomizo Yoshida, who was world famous for his achievements in experimental hepatocarcinogenesis since the early 1930s, was recommended by his UICC colleagues to act as the President for the 9th UICC Cancer Congress. That was a great honor both for Yoshida and Japan and all the cancer researchers and Yoshida’s friends in Japan assembled around him and did their best to organize the 1966 event. The 9th Congress turned out to be the largest international assembly in Japan in those days with 3000 foreign and 1000 Japanese participants and made a great success. It became a distinct springboard for the subsequent progress in cancer research and control in Japan and stimulated the increment of governmental research grants.
