【IMPORTANT NOTICE】COVID-19: What People Receiving Chemotherapy Should Know
For patients who are receiving or planning to receive chemotherapy at Cancer Institute Hospital of JFCR
COVID-19 has spread all around the world. If you are infected with COVID-19 during chemotherapy, you are at higher risk for severe illness. Therefore, it is very important for you to take precautions to lower their risk of getting COVID-19 infection.
Your daily life
- Stay at home as much as possible and avoid non-essential outings when you are receiving or scheduled to receive chemotherapy.
- Avoid going to crowded places (closed spaces with poor ventilation where people gather and talk to each other).
- Wash your hands frequently. It is recommended for you to clean your hands with alcohol-based hand/finger sanitizer and wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds frequently (e.g., before meals, after blowing your nose, after coughing or sneezing, when you get home, after touching things/surfaces touched by many people).
- Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, mouth). When you touch things that many people frequently touch (e.g., door knobs), it is recommended you wash your hands before touching your face.
- Please sleep well and eat well to maintain fine physical condition.
- It is more effective when both you and your family take the above listed precautions to lower the risk of getting COVID-19 infection.
Your outpatient visits
- Before leaving home, measure your body temperature. If you have fever higher than 37.5℃ and/or respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough), please wear a mask when coming to the hospital. Please notify the outpatient staff upon arrival.
- Your doctor may decide to cancel treatment, depending on your body temperature measured at the outpatient consultation or ATC (Ambulatory Treatment Center).
- Limit the number of people accompanying you to the outpatient appointment. If possible, we ask your accompanying family/friends to wait outside the hospital during your visit. Also, please do not be accompanied by family or friends who have cold symptoms.
- Follow cough etiquette:
- Wear a mask when you have coughs/sneezes
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose the used tissues promptly into a trash box.
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeves or inside the jackets when you don’t have a mask.
- *There may be some benefit of wearing a mask regardless of whether you have symptoms. In general, non-medical professionals who are recommend to wear a mask include:
- Those who with respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, runny nose) should wear a mask to reduce the risk of transmission to others
- Those who care for people with respiratory symptoms should wear a mask to prevent infection.
- Those who need to have close contacts with someone with respiratory symptoms (e.g., commuting train) should wear a mask to prevent infection.
However, we don’t require everyone entering our hospital to wear a mask due to the short supply of masks.
At our hospital, we are committed to providing the appropriate cancer treatment to each and every patient in safe environment, taking infection prevention and control precautions for COVID-19. However, if COVID-19 continues to spread in the future, we may need to decide to suspend some of our medical services. In such case, we may ask you to change your treatment and/or reschedule your appointments. We would appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Moreover, when we need to stop our medical services, we will reschedule your appointment and then contact you immediately.
