Pathological and molecular studies for bone and soft tissue tumors

The respiratory tumor group carries out pathological diagnosis and research together with Department of Lung Medicine of the Cancer Institute Hospital (CIH).

The chest surgery group of CIH performs surgical operations for approximately 200 cases annually of primary lung cancers, metastatic tumors and other chest tumors. All of the materials are diagnosed by the respiratory tumor group of the Department of Pathology. Diagnosis is mainly based on WHO classifications but, as necessary, more detailed and novel classifications are used for better estimation of prognosis. For examples, (1) we differentiate invasive and noninvasive adenocarcinomas for the most appropriate resection of small adenocarcinomas, (2) point out the presence of micropapillary pattern, a prognostic marker for early carcinomas, and (3) give precise grade of tumor differentiation for better understanding of tumor biological nature.

Regarding research activity, we proposed a new classification of lung neuroendocrine carcinomas (including small cell carcinoma and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma) by using cDNA microarray analysis and revealed carcinogenesis processes of lung cancer by smoking, asbestos, radiation and other inhalants including chromate compounds.
